A 'Crop maximisation project' has been launched in 49 villages of six district of Punjab to enhance per acre yield and to ensure food security. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is providing co-operation for this project which would be completed next year, a senior officer of Punjab Agriculture Department told APP here on Sunday.
Main objective of the project is to increase farm output and alleviate poverty in rural areas through improving income of small farmers, he said.
The project is being carried out in Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Rahim Yar Khan and Muzaffargarh districts of the province.
Three main crops wheat, rice and cotton will be covered under the programme, while crops like pulses, oilseeds, maize and fodder are also included to assist small farmers, he said.
The programmes would increase the per acre yield of crops to meet the rapidly growing food demands, as well as to reduce year to year variability in production on economically and environmentally sustainable basis, he added.
