A magnificent exhibition of leg spin bowling by Pakistan's Danish Kaneria who snapped up six for 102 wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka's batting to have them on a knife's edge on the fourth day of the second and final cricket Test at the National Stadium here on Sunday.
At stumps Sri Lanka were 361 for seven in the second innings and thus, enjoy a slender 91 runs advantage thereby surrendering the initiative to Pakistan with a day remaining for play.
Scores: Sri Lanka 208 and 361 for seven Pakistan 478.
Sri Lanka resumed the day at the overnight 134 for one with former captain Sanath Jayasuriya unbeaten on 96 and Kumar Sangakkara on four. Both batsmen went on to slam centuries in contrasting styles but when they perished they seemed to be utterly disappointed with themselves.
Sanath Jayasuriya, who on Saturday evening ran riot with the bat looked to be out of his depth on Sunday. Nonetheless, he managed to post his 14th century in his 94th Test match. It was studded with 14 turf-scorching boundaries and one huge six and it had come off 110 balls in a 122-minute stay at the wicket.
Soon after, Jayasuriya was sent back for 107 after sweeping a Danish Kaneria delivery but only to find the safe hands of Shoaib Malik at deep backward square leg to make Sri Lanka 139 for two. Despite, having hit a hundred, Jayasuriya waked back to the dressing room with his head held in his hands, having sensed that his departure would prove costly for Sri Lanka.
In the 35th over of the innings, Jayasuriya had completed 1,000 runs in a calender year in 11 Tests this year.
Kumar Sangakkara then got to his 19th individual half century in his 44th Test. It had come off 109 balls in 136 minutes and it was laced with six fours and a six. So far, Sangakkara has accumulated 3,400 runs in 44 Test appearances.
Sri Lanka went to lunch at 234 for two in 57 overs with Sangakkara 55 not out and Mahela Jayawardene on 26.
Jayawardene was the next to go to make Sri Lanka 253 for three. He fell to a bat and pad catch to Yasir Hameed off Danish Kaneria for a 66-ball 32 containing six hits to the fence after 97 minutes at the wicket.
Sri Lanka had completed the 270-run deficit in 74 overs at the drink interval with Sangakkara on 78 and Thilan Samaraweera on six.
Sri Lanka went to tea at 295 for three with Sangakkara nine short of his hundred and Samaraweera on 16.
At 307 for three Sangakkara celebrated by notching up his 7th Test century. It was made off 204 deliveries in 272 minutes and garnished with 12 fours and a six.
The second new ball was taken in the 87th over but the Pakistani bowlers failed to exploit it to their advantage and both Sangakkara and Jayawardene continued to plunder the bowlers.
In the 99th over, Danish Kaneria induced Samaraweera in making a false stroke and Younis Khan held a fine catch at first slip. Samaraweera who was prepared to play second fiddle to Sangakkara, got his 22 off 130 balls in a 168-minute stay. He and Sangakkara were associated in a 80-run stand for the fourth wicket. At the time, Sri Lanka were 333 for four in 98.3 overs.
But when Kumar Sankakkara was bowled by Rana Navedul Hasan for 138 to make Sri Lankan 351 for five, he threw his bat in the air in sheer disgust. His knock was aided with 20 boundaries and a six. In all, he faced 251 balls in 347 minutes at the wicket.
Sri Lanka lost their last three wickets for only nine runs and Danish Kaneria picked up his last three wickets in only 26 deliveries to draw the evening to a close.
