Pakistan believes that the expansion of the UN Security Council was an issue of major political significance for the international community and should be tackled with caution and consensus.
Addressing an Iftar-dinner for media men here on Monday, Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmud Kasuri said expansion of the Security Council should be limited and reforms to the United Nations should be based on caution and "comprehensiveness and consensus".
He recalled a recent resolution passed by the foreign ministers of Muslim countries at their Ankara meeting, asking for adequate representation of the Muslim Ummah in "any category of members" in an expanded Security Council, failing which the UN reforms will not be acceptable.
Answering another separate question on the suggestion of President Musharraf for a debate on options available for the solution of Kashmir dispute, Kasuri explained that the President had not proposed alternate solutions but ask the nation to debate on possibilities that could resolve the 57-year-old dispute.
It is a democratic process to seek people's advice on national issues and that was what President Musharraf has in mind to gauge the sentiments of the people.
