The Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production which met here on Monday with Senator Muhammad Akram in chair underlined the need of prompt delivery of cars by assemblers to customers.
The Committee while discussing the issue underlined the need for streamlining the system with a view to make the process transparent and to ensure prompt delivery of cars to customers by Pakistani assemblers.
The Committee was informed Pakistan's automobile industry was a fast developing economy and the industry experienced rapid expansion during last two years. The production volume of locally manufactured cars rose to 99000 this year as compared to 63000 during last financial year.
It was told, despite increase in production, the manufacturers were unable to meet the growing market demand resulting delivery period of cars increased manifold.
The steps taken by the government included allowing only one booking per NTN number and enlarging the dealers' base to break monopolistic situation.
Moreover, it has been made mandatory for "rent a car companies" not to accept the cars for rental purpose that are purchased through leasing till the full amount of the leased vehicle is paid.
This step, the committee was informed, was taken to facilitate in reducing the gap between demand and supply.
The Committee observed the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) should ensure supply of quality goods to the people at reasonable rates with a view to provide relief to the common man and appreciated the performance of the USC besides, suggested to open more utility stores in rural and urban areas.
The Committee made these observations while having a briefing from the Managing Director USC on the steps taken by the corporation for ensuring adequate supply at reasonable prices of essential consumer items to the common man.
The Committee was informed 344 utility stores were operating in the country and that those stores were playing their role as a price moderator. The USC reduced the prices of essential items during Ramazan.
It was further informed mobile stores had been set up to ensure availability of essential items at all the places.
The meeting was attended, besides the Chairman of the Committee Senator Muhammad Akram and Minister of State Ms Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli, by Senators Syed Dilawar Abbas, Mir Wali Muhammad Badini, Mrs Tanveer Khalid and Ilyas Ahmad Bilour.
Senator Ahmed Ali attended the meeting on special invitation. Mutawakkal Qazi, Secretary Ministry of Industries and Production, M D Utility Stores Corporation and senior officers of the Ministry of Industries and Production and CBR were also present.
