PPPP MNA Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that the government has ignored ground realities and problems being faced by the society while passing the bill on honour killing.
He said initially Sherry Rehman of the PPPP presented the bill, a better document, in the National Assembly on a Private Members Day but in the standing committee meeting government rejected the move.
The Parliamentarian was addressing a seminar on "Bill on Honour Killings: Concerns Addressed and Unaddressed" organised by Sustainable Development of Pakistan Institute (SDPI) and Citizen Action Group Against Honour killing (CAGAHK), here on Monday.
Pervaiz Ashraf said the government has passed the bill without the consent of the opposition. He said that government has ignored issues like gender discrimination, right in property and equal chances in every field while formulating of the law.
In his speech, Senator Sana Baloch belonging to PONM said that implementation of the bill is more important than its passage.
He emphasised that if number of honour killing cases has increased in the country, it means mental condition or thinking of the people has deteriorated.
The Senator informed the gathering that 73 percent of the people do not have the facility of the electricity and education in Balochistan so how these people can get awareness from the media. He said that honour killing bill is an eyewash and cannot bring any change in the areas where usually these cases take place.
SDPI representative Barrister Zafarullah said that government has equated honour killing to murder to reduce the cases in the country.
He added that government has changed the definition of the honour killing and replaced the life imprisonment with death sentence and SPs have been assigned the responsibility to investigate the cases.
