The government is examining a proposal to give Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) the sole responsibility of checking outgoing passengers, baggage/air cargo and export consignments at airports and dry ports with the help of snuffer dogs to effectively check narcotics smuggling. The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) on Wednesday issued instructions to all collectors of customs to submit comments on the proposal that ANF should undertake the responsibility of checking international passengers and their baggage using these dogs.
This would curtail the role of customs department and Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation, Customs and Excise in checking drug smuggling at the airports and dry ports.
The CBR will submit its comments to the Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation, Customs and Excise, for onward transmission to the ANF.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that the Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation, Customs and Excise, has demanded share from the equipment/weapons donated by US for carrying out anti-narcotics operations by ANF.
D.G. Intelligence and Investigation has asked the government to give some of the equipment like vehicles, weapons, communication sets to the agency to make it more effective in carrying out anti-narcotics operations.
The directorate has also pointed out that customs department and customs intelligence are not represented in any co-ordination meeting whether at the ANF Headquarters or Ministry of Interior. It is recommended that representatives of customs department and customs intelligence should be made part of these meetings.
