An unidentified gunman opened fire during Fajr prayers in Muhammedi Mosque in Buffer Zone area killing at least one worshipper and injuring two others, Pesh Imam and Moazzin, on Wednesday, police said. An unidentified man entered into the mosque during Fajr prayers and opened indiscriminate fire on the worshippers, killing Ismail on the spot, while two others received bullet injuries. Another accomplice of the gunman remained on the door of the mosque.
The injured have been identified as Mufti Farooq Ahmed Siddiqui (Pesh Imam) and Sajjad Zaman (Moazzin). Sajjad is stated to be in critical condition, hospital sources said.
Police was still unclear whether the attack was related to sectarian violence or the result of a personal enmity, a source said.
The assailant fired four to five bullets from a pistol, targeting Moazzin, "But a stray bullet killed a worshipper." Mufti Farooq also received bullet injury in the leg, the source said.
Police said the gunman and his accomplice managed to escape from the scene.
There were about over 60 worshippers in the mosque at the time of the attack.
