Pakistan Muslim League (N) condemned the government for not allowing former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to attend the funeral of their father Mian Muhammad Sharif in Pakistan, and said that action was unethical that went against humanity and Islam.
PML-N Punjab President Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa expressed these views while addressing a press conference here on Wednesday. PML-N other leaders were also present on the occasion.
Khosa claimed the Federal Information Minister and the Punjab Chief Minister issued false statements on the matter, and challenged them to prove their allegations. "The matter of the fact was that the Sharif family lodged no request to the Saudi or Pakistani governments for permission to accompany the body of Mian Sharif to Pakistan. It was a right of Nawaz Sharif to attend the funeral of his father in Pakistan," he added.
According to him, except Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and Kulsoom Nawaz, the Pakistani Ambassador to Saudi Arabia offered other members of the Sharif family to enter Pakistan for only three days to attend the funeral. However, the offer was rejected, as conditional offer was not acceptable to Nawaz Sharif and he felt it was his fundamental right to attend the funeral of his father.
Khosa averred it was also unfortunate the administration refused to hand over the body to the grandson of Mian Sharif and was flown to Raiwind on a helicopter from the Lahore airport.
"It seems that the government was frightened of the prospect of a huge turn out of people during the funeral prayers at Data Darbar if the body was allowed in the city. This very prospect would have exposed the hollow claims of the government that PML-N has lost popularity," he added.
