The National Highways and Motorway Police have busted a gang of highway robbers and recovered valuables worth millions of rupees, including firearms.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Motorway Police DIG Abdul Hafeez Bangash said that some highway bandits blocked the road by putting a tree on M-2 near 'Pindi Das' (Lahore-Islamabad Carriage way) at about 2 00 am on October 16.
They stopped a Daewoo bus (LRJ-5233) and snatched gold ornaments, mobile phones, watches and other valuables at gunpoint and fled the scene taking the advantage of darkness on seeing the motorway police patrolling team.
Police team comprising Chief Patrol Officer Rai Ghaffar, Senior Patrol Officers Nadeem Tahir, Ghulam Rasool and Patrol Officer Rao Sajjad, chased the robbers and over-powered one of the robbers identified as Tanveer, after an exchange of fire with them.
On receiving the information about the incident, Sheikhupura SP Inam-ur-Rehman and DIG Abdul Hafeez Bangash reached on the spot and contacted the local police for co-operation.
The team managed to apprehend other seven bandits of the gang, Javaid Ilyas Jaidi, Safdar Ali, Boota Jhari, Hameeda, Safar Ali, Imran Ilyas Boota and Phoga after interrogating the held accused.
During the preliminary investigation, the gangsters confessed committing dozens of other crimes, including armed robberies, swindling and suspected activities. The motorway police also recovered six 30 bore pistols from their possession and further investigation is underway.
National Highways and Motorway Police Inspector General Zia-ul-Hassan has commended the performance of the police team and announced cash awards and certificates for them. More arrests are expected in this case.
