Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) has embarked upon an ambitious programme to chalk out a line of action for implementation of a "Disaster Relief Plan" in collaboration with Red Crescent Society Sindh and Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA).
In this regard an elaborate presentation was arranged at the university for the officials of Red Crescent Society and KBCA.
Conducted by Dr Asif Zubair, Director Disaster Relief Plan, Institute of Human Settlement and Environment SSUET, the presentation was attended by Sindh Home Minister Rauf Siddiqi, Senator Saeed Siddiqi, Chairman Red Crescent Society (Sindh) Major General Bashir Khan (Retd), Chief Controller of Buildings Brigadier A S Nasir (Retd), OSD KBCA, Rauf Akhtar Farooqi, Vice-Chancellor SSUET Professor Dr Syed Nazir Ahmed, Brigadier (Retd) Qamarussalam, member Board of Governors SSUET, Ms Shamim Kazmi, member Red Crescent Society, besides a number of experts from Civil Engineering Department of SSUET.
Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Rauf Siddiqi held out a firm assurance of all co-operation of Sindh government for the ambitious task undertaken by Sir Syed University.
He observed that most of our departments have, over the years, reached a stage where any one of them might be able to give some kind of performance.
He praised SSUET for taking up this assignment and said particularly this institution had been playing its role at the national level.
"Our co-operation will be forthcoming for any plan that will be taken up in the interest of the province and this city," the minister declared.
He described chancellor SSUET and his team an asset for the nation and said that the task undertaken by the university should transform into the shape of a national institution as early as possible.
He held out an assurance that there will be no interference from any government department while working out strategies for implementation of the Disaster Relief Plan.
Senator Saeed Siddiqi also assured of full co-operation of legislators if a need will arise for any amendments in the existing laws or new enactments to enable the implementation of the plan as conceived by the SSUET.
He suggested benefiting from the expertise of organisations, like Seismic Survey of Pakistan, Sindh Relief Commission, Meteorological Department and Civil Defence.
Major General Bashir expressed the same views and said that Red Crescent Society, which too have a well-conceived plan with it, will work hand in hand with the university for attainment of tangible results.
