The city police has enhanced it patrolling around busy streets and main shopping areas in view of increasing threat of terrorists attacks on public places and religious buildings as the Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching fast.
Police sources said on Wednesday the surveillance of security staff had been increased around the mosques, imambarghas and shopping areas to keep an eye on criminals likely to disturb peace.
Sources said the security staff on the VIP duties had been thinned and the withdrawn officers had been deputed to beef up security activities, as the Eid was approaching fast, the shops were opened round the clock and markets were full with customers.
In the rush of people there was hardly any space to move fast while traffic remained jam for hours together, where helpless people left vulnerable to criminal acts, officials said.
They said that Zaibunnisa Street, Clifton, Tariq Riad, Haidri Market and M. A. Jinnah Road were some of the areas in the main city, which had police and security force in full strength.
Official said that equal importance had been given to the shopping areas in Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Liaquatabad, Bolton Market and Kemari where shops do roaring business and people flock markets for the last minute shopping.
Police said that adequate steps had been taken to protect people in those areas as well, adding the hospitals and fire brigade staff was on the alert to deal with emergency.
Police has appealed to the people to remain vigilant throughout the Eid shopping and take precautionary measure before visiting shops. They have advised people to go for shopping in the daytime instead of in the night.
