It is a matter of shame and disgrace that as many as 549 costlier residential plots in Islamabad were doled out by the prime ministers of the past years to numerous politicians, generals and bureaucrats as favours in the garb of discretionary quota.
The list of beneficiaries includes army officers of general and other senior ranks, as if the plots given to them in various housing schemes of the Defence Housing Authority and the Army Welfare Trust were not enough.
Other gainers are the industrialists and landlords, nawabs and princes, past and sitting NA Speakers, and a former prime minister too, who could definitely afford to obtain the plots on market price.
Though an impolitic disclosure, it is timely in the sense that the same day federal cabinet approved CDA plan to develop another seven sectors in Islamabad covering 39,000 residential plots, whereas four sectors are to be developed on fast track basis.
It thus provides an excellent opportunity to all the MNAs, Senators and Generals, serving or retired, whether benefited earlier or not, to obtain at least one plot each availing the PM's discretionary powers.
If Benazir Bhutto can give 350 lucrative plots, why Shaukat Aziz, who heads the largest-ever cabinet, could be restrained not to allot double the figure.
