Former President of Pakistan Sardar Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari has said that Asif Ali Zardari was arrested under serious charges of corruption, breach of law and he cannot be released on the desire of any person or party. However, judiciary can acquit him as it was in its jurisdiction. Talking to newsmen at Multan airport on Sunday, Leghari who arrived here to offer Fateha and to condole with Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on the death of his mother.
However, it is the duty of the higher courts to decide appeals according to the norms of justice. When asked that Syed Mushahid Hussain and Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi had stated that Asif Zardari, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, and Javed Hashmi are political prisoners and they must be released, Farooq Leghari replied it was not in his knowledge. He said that it was a right of the opposition to launch a peaceful drive to highlight the errors and mistakes of the government but it should not launch an agitation because our country cannot afford it.
To a question, he said that there was no plan to amend the constitution for holding dual office by the President. However, an Act was passed by the parliament for General Pervez Musharraf only. He stressed the need for negotiations and understanding between the opposition and the government and government should take initiative to approach the opposition on national issues.
