There is a general decline of about 20 percent in the Eid-ul-Fitr related sales mainly due to tight money market and the unprecedented hike in prices of the items generally required for Eid.
The worst affected items are footwear, cloth and readymade garments. A general survey in the main markets of the city shopkeepers were complaining that the sales was down by about 20 percent.
Eid is a few days away but the public rush usually witnessed on these days has not been seen yet. For example, a person who wanted to purchase a shoe now seems satisfied with having a simple sandal. Footwear shops are not doing enough business but rush is seen on handcarts (Thellas).
Those who wanted readymade garments are now looking for cheaper items. Garments with known brand names are not in such big demand as once used to be.
Most of the consumers fond of readymade garments are also finding their ways to the markets of second-hand clothing. In these markets shirts of good quality are available but without trousers to match.
It is reported that 32 percent population is living below the poverty line. But the slump in the sales of Eid shopping shows that more population is living under poverty line, according to trade circles.
