Five people were killed in a stampede at New Delhi's main railway station Saturday as hordes of passengers rushed to board a train bound for eastern India, a railway spokesman said. At least six people were admitted to hospital with injuries suffered in the stampede, a hospital spokesman said.
"The railway hospital has given us reports of five deaths among the people who have been taken to hospital," said D.P.S. Sandhu, spokesman for state-run Northern Railways.
Trains are usually congested in India at this time of year which is a key period in the Hindu festival calendar.
The accident occurred when a person slipped on the stairs, creating chaos as hundred of others surged forward to board the train that was about to leave for Patna, capital of Bihar state.
