The post-holiday session observed five paisa fall in the interbank market on Thursday versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 59.63 and Rs 59.68, dealers said.
Everyone was exchanging Eid-greetings, and also taking part in business, as all the trading centres re-opened after observing a four-day holiday on account of Eidul Fitr, they added.
They said the dollar was in demand as importers were in the market to cover their near-term requirements as the currency market was closed for long week-end on account of Eid holidays, adding in the near future, the rupee might maintain its present levels versus the dollar.
In the world markets, the dollar was in striking distance of record lows against the euro and 7-1/2 month lows versus the yen ahead of G-20 meeting, dealers said.
The US currency skidded to an all-time low of around $1.3045 per euro in New York trade on Wednesday. Against the Japanese unit, it plunged to around 103.80 yen a level not seen since the beginning of April.
OPEN MARKET RATES: By and large, the same pattern was witnessed in the open market as the euro posted a fresh gain of 50 paisa versus the rupee for buying and selling at Rs 77.20 and Rs 77.50, dealers said, adding the it expanded its ground versus the rupee on the back of dollar's weakness in the international markets.
The single European currency was available at Rs 77.10 and Rs 77.40 in the morning session, they said, adding the people were buying euros on surging its demand in the international markets.
The rupee, however, gained 10 paisa versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 60.00 and Rs 60.10, they added
