World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the library of the College of Physicians and Surgeon Pakistan (CPSP) as National Depository Library in Pakistan for its publications. The CPSP library, which is already considered as one of the largest medical libraries in the country as far as the services and current collection of books is concerned, will also provide information regarding the WHO publications through a reference and loan service within the country.
The President of CPSP, Professor Dr Sultan Farooqui told newsmen that the college has made arrangements that the WHO's publications should be made freely available for consultation without any restriction. The consultation is not limited to affiliated persons and members of the CPSP library only.
The college has properly catalogued and shelved the WHO publications by allocating a separate space in the education wing of the library.
This area will remain open to general public, Dr Farooqi said, adding that the section specified for WHO material is well equipped and staffed.
Since its inception in 1965, the CPSP library has been acquiring the latest medical literature. It also provides Internet and email facilities to the students. To keep apace with modern technological advancement, the library has set up a computer section with seven CD-ROM databases.
The facility covers more than 4,600 medical journals, published throughout the world in various languages.
