Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) has said corruption was root cause of poverty and injustice, and also negation of fundamental rights as well as spirit of democracy. While addressing a conference on the topic of 'Combating Corruption in South Asia' here on Thursday, Khalid said corruption was a universal problem and it could only be tackled by involving people from all segments of the society.
In order to tackle the issue of corruption on permanent basis, good governance is a must, he said. He added Pakistan was involved in international issues and performing its due role which had improved its image in the comity of nations.
"NAB is devotedly working to eradicate corruption from the country by using all the available resources. NAB is also taking action impartially from top to bottom", he said.
However, he was of the view National Accountability Bureau (NAB) alone could not overcome that problem.
He said President Musharraf was also working with sincerity for the betterment of the country as well as people of Pakistan.
He further said corruption had been declined due to various steps taken by the present regime. To a question he said the prices of essential items had witnessed downward trend due to policies of the government.
To another query about Asif Ali Zardari he said they had to wait final decision of the court in his case.
NAB Chairman Munir Hafeez told newsmen on the occasion Asif Zardari was facing different cases, however courts were independent to give bails to accused.
He said NAB alone could not put all the things at right track, however it would continue its work. Dr Kamal Hossain, Dr Salman and Dr Muhammad Waseem also spoke on the occasion.
