Police on Saturday shot dead four suspected freedom fighters on the shores of Lake Dal in the capital of Indian occupied Kashmir. The four men were riding in an auto rickshaw near the lake, the main tourist attraction in Indian occupied Srinagar, when the gunbattle erupted.
"They (the suspected freedom fighters) were asked to stop by the police. Instead they opened fire which was returned, killing all four inside the auto rickshaw," a police spokesman said.
"All are believed to be freedom fighters," the spokesman said, adding security forces were checking their identities.
No group has said its members have been killed in Indian occupied Srinagar, urban hub of an insurgency launched by freedom fighters in 1989 against Indian rule in Indian occupied Kashmir.
It was the second clash in Indian occupied Srinagar since Indian occupation troops shot dead two freedom fighters on November 17 near a stadium where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hours later addressed a rally.
Earlier this week India's prime minister held talks with his Pakistani counterpart in New Delhi where they renewed their commitment to keep alive the peace dialogue.
