The Bread Bakers Association on Saturday night unconditionally announced calling off their strike for increase in the rate of the bread and vowed to maintain weight and quality of the bread after holding successful talks with the government. The announcement to this effect was made by a representative of the Nanbai Association and President of Tajior Grand Alliance Habibullah Khan while addressing a high-level meeting here at Civil Secretariat on Saturday. Minister Local Government Sardar Muhammad Idress chaired the meeting called to discuss the situation arising out of the strike of the Nanbais.
The Minister Local Government in his address said that the government was aware of the problems of the Nanbais however, problems of the 3.5 million Peshawris would have also to be looked after. He made it clear that no compromise would be made on the quality and weight of the bread and added that the government would ensure to keep the prices of daily use items at reasonable level.
He said, the meeting agreed to keep intact the ban on the sale of double bread in the city and added that the government would review the situation vis a vis prices of the flour and tried to address the grievances of the Nanbais.
The meeting was also attended by the Provincial Food Minister Fazle Rabbani Advocate, District Nazim Azam Afridi, Secretary Local Government Umer Khan Afridi, Secretary Food Jamaluddin and other high ranking officials of the administration.
It may be mentioned here that the first round of talks had failed to accrue any result and as such the process of dialogue had to discontinue for two hours to have consultation with the stakeholders.
The strike was called off in the second round of talks.
The representatives of the bread bakers contended that despite rise in the prices of the essential commodities, the rate of 80 gram bread was not being enhanced and said that they could only sell 80 gram bread for Rs 2 only.
