Argentine export commitments of 2004/05 wheat totalled 1.105 million tonnes by November 26, the local agriculture department said on Monday, giving information on the new crop for the first time. By the same date last year, Argentina had sold 1.54 million tonnes of the grain. The 2004/05 wheat crop was seeded through September and is being harvested now.
Argentina reported sales of 500,000 tonnes of new-crop wheat to Egypt, 200,000 tonnes to Brazil, 100,000 tonnes each to the United Arab Emirates and South Africa, 70,000 tonnes to Sri Lanka, 60,000 tonnes to Yemen, 45,000 tonnes to Indonesia, 20,000 tonnes to Peru and 10,000 tonnes to Uruguay.
The US Department of Agriculture forecasts Argentina's 2004/05 wheat exports at 9 million tonnes.
The estimated sales are based on information collected from industry sources.
Corn sales rise
Argentine export commitments of 2003/04 corn totalled 9.48 million tonnes by November 26, up from 9.37 million tonnes a week before, the local agriculture department said on Monday.
By the same date last year, corn sales reached 10.625 million tonnes.
Argentina reported sales last week of 50,000 tonnes of corn apiece to Chile and the United Arab Emirates and 20,000 tonnes to Algeria.
At the same time, the government cut its estimate of sales to unspecified destinations by 10,000 tonnes.
The government's sales data refers to corn seeded starting in August 2003 and harvested through to September.
