NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has said that quality education is key to development, therefore, the MMA government is going with the focus approach to spread the network of education at all corners of the province. "To achieve this goal, there is a dire need for public-private partnership," he added.
He was addressing the Parents' Day function at St. Merry School, Peshawar on Saturday morning. Provincial ministers and other high-ranking officials were also present on the occasion.
The chief minister in his address indicated the importance of education as the inevitable factor to progress and development. He said: "The troika of teachers, parents and students is a source of accomplishing the process of education - a source of accomplishment of individuals' entity that leads to an ideal society." He said: "Education is the inborn human right but it is unfortunate that in our country it was politicised like other institutions and held out an assurance that the MMA government would discourage this trend.
He said that the MMA government doubled the budgetary allocation of education sector and his government was in contact with the donors to expand quality education to all corners of the province.
He reminded that the provincial government yesterday (Friday) signed a MoU with the National Commission for Human Development to make every body accessible to education. Under the agreement, the provincial government would open up 6,000 literacy centres throughout the province that would make 0.18 million persons literate, he added.
He said, in order to ensure the basic right to education the provincial government has earmarked Rs 1 billion that would also result in providing jobs to 20,000 graduates throughout the province. "A total of 9,500 teachers are being recruited to overcome the staff shortage in various educational institutions," he added.
He held out an assurance that the process would be a transparent one and no one would influence it because during the four-month course, the efficiency and performance of teachers would be monitored. He said, "there is no match to what the MMA government gained in its two-year rule."
The chief minister said that his government has already initiated educational reforms in the province under which a network of educational institutions is being spread, including initiating post-graduate classes in most districts, setting up of a university for women, women medical college and a women sports directorate, upgradation of schools, declaring education up to Matric free, provision of free books to primary school-going children. "The government is also going to make education up to Middle compulsory."
He gave away trophies and shields to the students on their best performance. He also announced Rs 0 5 million for the school and Rs 10,000 each for the teachers of physical education.
