New Zealand beat Australia by four wickets with two balls to spare in their opening Chappell-Hadlee Trophy one-day cricket international at Docklands Stadium here on Sunday. Wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum hit the winning run in Shane Watson's final over to give the Kiwis their first one-day win over the Australians in their last eight meetings. New Zealand looked to be struggling to get the required runs when they needed 32 runs off the last 18 balls.
But the match swung decisively in the third-last over of the innings when McCullum and batting partner Hamish Marshall plundered 22 runs off Michael Kasprowicz to leave New Zealand with the much easier task of 10 runs off the last 12 balls.
Brett Lee conceded five off his last over and Watson, replacing Kasprowicz, had the onerous task of defending just five runs off the last over.
McCullum hit a boundary off Watson's first ball and then the winning single off the fourth ball to give the Kiwis the first win in the best-of-three Trophy series.
The next match takes place at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.
