All Pakistan Used Autoparts Dealers Association President, Mian Mohammad Aslam has appealed to Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, Federal Industries and Production Minister, Jehangir Khan Tareen and Commerce Minister, Humayun Akhtar Khan to lift ban on import of used auto parts in the larger interests of economy of the country. A spokesman of the association said here on Wednesday that hundreds and thousands families attached with the business of used autoparts were suffering because of this ban.
At the moment, there ware so many second-hand vehicles running on roads but their owners were bound to use smuggled autoparts.
He averred that by allowing import of used autoparts, the government would earn huge revenue on the one hand while the people attached with this business would go back to businesses on the other.
"The Engineering Development Board (EDB) in a letter to government departments concerned had already informed that there were certain used autoparts that were not being manufactured in Pakistan, thus its import should be allowed. Due to bureaucratic bottlenecks the ban could not be lifted so far", he added.
While citing a Customs Intelligence report, Mian Aslam said that the government had been suffering a loss of billions of rupees only because of this ban for the last seven years.
"In the past a committee comprising former Minister for Industries, Liaquat Ali Jatoi, Secretary Industry, Secretary Commerce, EDB Co-ordinator, Chairman Central Board of Revenue (CBR), representatives of Papam and people from Association was formed. The committee recommended that import of all those autoparts that were not being locally manufactured should be allowed, but no one paid heeds to the recommendation", he added.
