Bangladeshi government has shown keen interest to further improve and expand bilateral trade relations with Pakistan. They have also shown interest in exporting Bangladeshi tea to Pakistan. Pakistan is one of the biggest tea markets and the world's third largest importer of tea and Bangladesh is looking new export avenues, says a press statement issued here on Tuesday.
A Bangladeshi delegation led by Brigadier General S.A.H.M. Tauhid Chairman Bangladesh Tea Board, Chittagong called on Minister of State for Commerce Hamid Yar Hiraj to discuss the trade relations here on Wednesday.
The delegation met with the minister and expressed thanks of Bangladeshi government for granting zero percent import duty on tea.
It should be recalled that Pakistan has granted a quota of 10,000 metric tons of tea to be imported from Bangladesh at zero percent import duty.
Hiraj stressed on expanding trade relations between the two countries as the present level of bilateral trade, which was 240 million dollars during 2003-04, does not match the actual potential, which can easily be exploited for the expansion of bilateral trade between the two countries.
He further said that Pakistan also wanted to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Bangladesh as the cabinet had already given mandate to the ministry of commerce to negotiate it.
The minister also ensured that Pakistan would keep importing tea from Bangladesh and would facilitate the tea importers to the maximum.
