Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes express bowler Brett Lee is close to his best in the run-up to next week's first cricket Test against Pakistan in Perth. Ponting admitted the world champions would seriously consider axing a batsman to make way for the fast bowler in a four-pronged pace battery on the pace-friendly WACA pitch.
Lee was Friday named in an unchanged 12-man squad for the Perth Test, starting next Thursday, after two strong appearances in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy one-day series against New Zealand in Melbourne and Sydney this week.
His chances of evading 12th man duties for the fourth straight Test hinge on how selectors view the slick and bouncy WACA wicket and whether he would give more value than paceman Michael Kasprowicz.
