High-ranking military officers were likely among 16 persons who died aboard a National Guard airplane when it crashed on Friday in El Junquito, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north-west of Caracas, officials said. Civil Defence director Antonio Rivero said that those aboard included "high-ranking military officers, among them, supposedly, the inspector general of the National Guard," he said, while awaiting an official passenger list.
"The cause of the crash is unknown," Vargas state fire chief Juan Carlos Rodriguez told reporters. The plane took off from Los Teques, 30 kilometers (18 miles) south-west of Caracas, and headed for La Carlota airport in a residential area of Caracas.
