Sindh has opposed filling of Mangla dam till fulfilment of water requirements of the province, it is learnt. These objections were aired by the representative of Sindh in the first day meeting of Technical Committee on Water Resources (TCWR), headed by ANG Abbasi. The committee would continue deliberations on water issue till December 22.
Both Wapda and Irsa officials argued that the existing filling criterion was based on the water availability and the recommendations of Irsa's Advisory Committee duly represented by the provinces. Irsa also made its presentation on the operation of link canal such as Chashma-Jehlum and Tansua-Punjnad.
When contacted ANG Abbasi said that substantial work has been done on the issue of water availability, on the basis of which the government would take decision on construction of future big dams.
He said that the Committee has asked Wapda and Planning Commission to prepare presentations on the future big water dams, which include Kalabagh, Basha, and Akhori, so that the committee would be able to examine their presentations from technical point of view.
