The Health Ministry has summoned both Pakistan Medical and Dental College (PM&DC) and private medical institutions to resolve their controversial issues, including registration. "We have advised PM&DC and medical institutions to hold meeting in the next few weeks to resolve their problems," federal Health Secretary Syed Anwer Mehmood stated this, while addressing the second convocation of Shifa College of Medicines, here on Wednesday.
Besides students and teachers, Bahria University Rector Vice Admiral Fayyaz-ur-Rehman (Retd) and Shifa College of Medicines Dean Dr Mohammad Amin were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the participants, Syed Anwer Mehmood said that the government strongly believes in public and private sector partnership. However, he made it clear that the government would never compromise on quality education.
He said that there is a need to discourage education in plazas and apartments. There is dire need for setting up centres of excellence, Mehmood added.
The health secretary admitted that private medical institutions and PM&DC are not enjoying cordial relations.
"This is an era of public-private partnership. We will play a role of bridge between Pakistan Medical and Dental College and private institutions," he said.
He said that Shifa College of Medicines has asked the Health Ministry to allow their fresh doctors for practicing at the Federal Government Services Hospital. The Health Ministry is actively considering the demand and would respond in a positive manner, he said. Congratulating the graduates, Syed Anwer Mehmood urged them to realise their responsibilities and work with dedication, commitment and passion.
Fayyaz-ur-Rehman stressed that it was the prime responsibility of doctors to provide best healthcare facilities to the people. He also agreed that medical colleges must be monitored. "One of the major cause of low standard education in institutions is poor system of internal examination," he said.
Shifa College of Medicines Dean Dr Mohammad Amin also spoke on the occasion. Later, Anwer Mehmood distributed degrees among the graduates.
