The Lahore High Court (LHC), while suspending the sentence awarded to former federal minister Haji Muhammad Nawaz Khokhar, has allowed bail to him. The applicant, who was in Adyala jail, has challenged the decision of an accountability court, which convicted him for three years with a fine of Rs three million.
He was also disqualified for next 10 years from being member parliament. The accused has been facing the charges of not paying revenue taxes and thus causing damage to the public exchequer.
CONTEMPT PETITION DISPOSES OF: The Lahore High Court (LHC) disposed of a contempt petition against District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Sheikhupura, when he gave an assurance to implement the court orders in letter and in spirit.
The respondent DCO, Sheikh Zafar, appeared before the court and contended that he was recently appointed at Sheikhupura and assured to implement the court orders.
The court had issued a notice to the respondent DCO in a petition by the owner of a construction company. The petitioner contended that the respondent was creating hurdles in the construction work of his company. He said that the district council has awarded contract to his company in accordance with the law. He approached the court against the respondent and got relief, as the court had directed the DCO to act in accordance with the law. However, the respondent DCO ignored the court orders, and the petitioner approached the court again through contempt petition.
The court disposed of the petition after assurance from the DCO to act in accordance with the law.
LHCBA MEMBER FILES REVIEW PETITION: A member of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has filed a review petition against the decision of a single bench of the august court with prayer to direct the respondent government to review the map of ring road being constructed around the Lahore City.
The petitioner M.D. Tahir contended that the court, while dismissing his petition, observed that the petitioner is not effectee of the project. He contended that 14 mosques, a graveyard and a shrine would be demolished, if the project were implemented in present plan. He said that being a Muslim he is effectee of the project. He contended that the august court has already declared that any mosque could not be demolished or shifted.
He, therefore, prayed to the court to direct the respondent to review the site plan of ring road project.
