Exhibition of paintings by members of the Fountain House is attracting a large number of visitors here at the Alhamra Arts Council. It is for the first time that an exhibition of paintings prepared by psychiatric patients has been organised. Moreover, community education programme on 'Psychiatric Disorders' was held to create awareness among families of psychiatric patients. The function was organised by Department of Psychiatry, Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) Lahore in collaboration with World Psychiatric Association (WPA) and Lahore Arts Council.
Psychiatric patients and their family members in a large number participated in this programme in which experts highlighted the psychiatric issues in relation to career selection, education, marriage, pregnancy, nutrition, drug treatment, leisure activities etc.
Shields were also given to Journalist Muhammad Saleem (Business Recorder), Singer Ghulam Ali, social workers Haji Inam Elahi Asar and Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib, and psychologist Dr Fareeha Paracha in recognition of their outstanding services in the field of mental health.
Prizes were also given to those psychiatric patients who were recovered from the illness.
Professor Dr Haroon Rashid Chaudhry, Chairman Organising Committee of the programme said that this was the largest ever community education programme in which experts and caregivers highlighted different aspects of psychiatric disorders. He emphasised that psychiatric patients are recoverable, provided psychiatrist treats a psychiatric patient.
