US stocks were higher Thursday, as strong durable goods data and an improvement in consumer sentiment for December signalled economic strength, but trading volumes were slim before the Christmas holiday. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 25.28 points, or 0.24 percent, at 10,841.38. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 1.95 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,211.52. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was up 6.08 points, or 0.28 percent, at 2,163.11.
At midday, about 525 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, while 847 million shares were traded on the Nasdaq.
