Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi has stressed that the people need to be educated through media about conservation of electricity, keeping in view the low availability of water and high prices of furnace oil in international market. While presiding over a meeting here at Wapda on Friday, Jatoi said the energy to be conserved could be used for commercial and industrial purposes, making country economically strong and self-reliant.
He also underlined the need for initiating projects in backward areas of the country to bring them at par with the developed ones. In order to make payment of electricity bills less cumbersome, various options were discussed including pre-paid cards, payment through cheques and provision of bar code on bills etc.
Chairman, Tariq Hamid told the Minister that Wapda had exceeded the half-yearly targets in most of the fields including rural electrification and agricultural tube-well connections.
Earlier, progress on Jinnah Hydro Power Project, Gomal Zam Dam, Neelam-Jhelum Hydel Power Project, Muzaffargarh-Gatti transmission line and import of used thermal power plants from United Arab Emirates was reviewed in the meeting. Matters pertaining to the power generation supply position and monthly projection, rehabilitation work of 220-KV Jamshoro-Karachi transmission line, payment of net hydel profit to NWFP and unbundling of power companies were also discussed.
