Christmas is being celebrated in Southern Punjab amid tight security. Police commandoes were deployed at the churches, Women Christian Hospital, Pastoral Institute and participants are being thoroughly checked with metal detectors before entering the worship places. All the churches, missionary schools ,and institutions were decorated with colourful buntings, lighting.
"There are 2.3 million Christians in Pakistan. Of them, 48 percent are Protestants and 52 percent are Catholics while in Multan region, 40,000 Christian families are living, while 62 missionary schools and a number of hospitals and dispensaries are functioning, said Bishop John Victor (Protestant), adding: "We are justified in demanding a seat in the Senate."
He said more than 3,000 Christian female teachers, 30,000 nurses, 200 private secretaries are serving, 60 NGO and 10 churches exist in Multan.
Bishop John Victor said there are 10 churches in Multan, two in Muzaffargarh, 100 in Lahore, 17 in Quetta, nine in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Bishop Andrew Francis (Catholic) said: "We are enjoying equal rights and facilities in Pakistan, and we have no complaint of discrimination, however, there was a need for their further improvement to end the sense of deprivation among the minorities. He said: "We are not feeling ourselves insecure in Pakistan. However, Pakistan was facing the same threat from the terrorists like rest of the world.
