NWFP Governor Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (retd) has emphasised the need for attaining excellence in the field of science and technology and said the nation which have laid emphasise on that aspect of knowledge were dictating their terms to those who had emphasised else where.
Addressing the 11th Parents Day ceremony at Garrison Cadet College Kohat on Friday, the governor said education was the fundamental need for development and progress of a country because the knowledge had emerged as the real power.
"It is the education, which rules the world", the governor said and added "the future of the nation is closely linked with quality of education and it must be properly focussed upon".
Our motherland, he added, direly needed a leap in that direction and urged students that they must had to practically prove themselves as the symbol of the expectation of the nation.
The governor said they had just entered into the 21st century with a passionate desire to lead our nation in the new millennium with honour, grace and dignity. The governor advised the cadets to devote all their energies towards attaining excellence in education, inculcate values and steer the country to the path of progress and prosperity. "You should not waste your time because time is a precious commodity and you must make the best use of it", he stressed.
The governor was highly impressed with overall progress and performance of the Garrison Cadet College Kohat and said the college had carved out a place of eminence for itself and emerged as an ideal educational institution. He congratulated the principal and college staff for making commendable gains in short spans of time.
He said the educational institution of prestige and repute took long time to grow but despite difficult circumstance the college had made a rapid progress, which was quite praiseworthy. He noted with pleasure, besides high quality education the college was also giving due attention to discipline, character building, physical fitness and a wholesome range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
"It is good that Garrison Cadet College Kohat does not remain contended with mere academic education of the students but caters for all those aspects which carves the students into balanced personalities", he remarked.
The governor was confident the cadets of the college would turn out to be assets to the country and would prove to be effective leaders of tomorrow.
Mamon-ur-Rasheed was declared the best cadet of the year and awarded the coveted award of the college - "The Principals Champion Trophy", whereas cadet Muhammad Babar and Cadet Shoaib Ahmad were given medals and trophies for being best in academic and sports, respectively.
Similarly, LENNA House was adjudged the best house of the college. Besides, Major General Niaz Ahmad Khattak and members of the Board of Governors of the college, the ceremony was largely attended by the parents and elite of the area.
The Principal of the college while welcoming the guests disclosed that top two students of the college obtained the highest marks in all the boards examinations of the province. He added that 67 out of 68 cadets obtained A-1 grade except one who obtained A grade in the recent matric examination.
Similarly, in the F. Sc. examination, out of the 80 cadets appeared in Part-I, 41 obtained 80 percent and above marks whereas rest of the cadets got 70 per cent and above marks. Similar was the case in respect of latest F. Sc. part-II examination in which most of the candidates performed quite well.
The college, he remarked had also performed well in the extra-curricular activities and two of it's cadets had been declared best sportsman at the national level.
Talking about the financial requirements, the Principal said the institution was being run on self-reliance basis. He informed ever-since its establishment only the governor Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (Retd) had provided a grant of Rs 6.5 million in 2001 which was spent on the construction of college hostel.
Earlier, the Governor also inaugurated the hostel.
Meanwhile, a smartly turned out contingent of cadets presented marches past, P T Show, gymnastic, and teakwando, and received great appreciation from the audience.
