Federal Law Minister Wasi Zafar has urged the bar councils to play active role in improving judicial system for dispensing inexpensive and quick justice to common man. While addressing a seminar held under the auspices of Pakistan Institute of National Affairs (PINA) here on Sunday, Wasi, however, did not agree with the idea of establishing judicial academy to achieve the goal.
He was of the view that bar councils must play a leading role in training and upbringing legal experts so that rules framed by the judiciary could be implemented in letter and sprit. He stated that simple amendments will not work in prevailing circumstances, however, some laws required re-modification.
Advising the bar members to avoid indulging in politics, he called for frequent interaction of lawyers with the bar councils to abreast themselves with day to day legal requirements of the people. He stressed the need for carrying out comprehensive research in the legal issues.
He maintained that present government was keen to introduce judicial reforms and added it had already prepared a Judicial Reforms Bill, which was yet to be approved. He further said that the government was also keen to establish centre of excellence in every province where members of the bar association could carry out research.
He further said that the government was actively considering a proposal to revise the salary structure of judges.
Former president Supreme Court Bar Association Abid Hassan Manto in his address stressed the need for strengthening and improving standard of judicial academy. He also called for reintroducing legal ethics in the field of law.
Mrs Nasira Iqbal stressed the need for establishing Law University. She was of the view that people attached with judiciary should be trained properly before inducting in the profession. She added that justice must be done to all and sundry irrespective of status and position in the society.
Hamayun Ehsan, Masood Akhtar, Zafar Iqbal, Mrs Shamsa, Chaudhry Fawad Hussain in their addresses called for maintaining honesty in the legal profession.
