Cytogenetic Laboratory Project at the National Institute of Child Health was (NICH) launched on Monday. The project is being carried out by the Child Aid Association (CAA), in collaboration with the administration of NICH. The Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA) has also committed a grant of dollars 50,000 for the equipment and training of personnel pertaining to the project.
The construction of the lab is expected to be started in a couple of months, while the project would be operational by the end of 2005.
Child Aid Association President Professor Nizam-ul-Hasan speaking on the occasion said as even before 9/11 the opportunities for training of Pakistani doctors abroad were dwindling specially in new disciplines, it was therefore, necessary those opportunities to be created at home.
He pointed out Cytogenetic Laboratory, Texas Children Hospital Director Dr Rizwan Naeem was the person who visited the NICH last year as head of group of doctors of SMC Alumni and floated the idea of setting up the Cytogenetic laboratory at NICH.
After due deliberations the proposal matured in October this year in the form of combined efforts of Child Aid Association, Department of Cytogenetics Texas Children Hospital Houston and the administration of NICH, he mentioned.
Appreciating the efforts of Dr Rizwan and Dr Nadeem Zafar he said it was through the efforts of those people the APPNA got involved in the project and committed a grant of dollars 50,000, whereas rest of the money would be raised by CAA, he explained.
He further lauded the efforts of NICH Director Dr Afroz Ramzan for allotting an area for construction of the lab.
