India's army chief visited Beijing on Monday during his first trip to China in a decade, reflecting warming ties between the world's two most populous nations. Vij's visit to China was designed to build trust between the two countries' nuclear-armed militaries, officials and analysts said. The neighbours fought a brief but bitter border war in 1962, but growing trade has helped stimulate stronger relations between two of Asia's largest economies.
General N.C. Vij was set to meet his counterpart, People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chief of Staff Liang Guanglie on Tuesday as well as Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan, who visited India in March, after an official welcoming ceremony on Monday, an Indian embassy spokesman said.
