Lunda Bazaar selling second-hand woollies is attracting hordes of shoppers as the cold wave intensifies here with each passing day. Meant originally to serve the clothing needs of low-income, the Lunda Bazaar is catering warm and woollen clothes with skyrocketing prices in the market.
People in general and women in particular are witnessed haggling with the Lunda Bazaar shopkeepers who are predominantly Pushtoons. Jerseys, jackets, sweaters, mufflers, waist-coats, trousers and even woollen socks - all in very good condition - are available in the Lunda Bazaar, which is available for the poor and needy in almost every town.
In main Lunda Bazaar at Hussain Agahi Road Multan, a pullover for Rs 30 to 50, depending on the quality, colour, design and condition of the piece, while a coat for Rs 100 to 200 and a leather jacket for Rs 300 to Rs 400 per piece can be purchased. Some wise people prefer to shop for used woollies when winter bids adieu and prices drop to half.
It is ironic that when a poor man wears something decent, it is assumed he got it from Lunda, but when a well-off person wears the same thing from Lunda, he can easily pass it off as a gift from relatives/friends living abroad.
This is not an infrequent occurrence, as persistent sifting through the bags of used clothes pays handsome dividends when a specially good and almost new piece is discovered and worn by the so-called 'sufaid posh' of society.
The ubiquitous Lunda Bazaar is a godsend for the truly poor and needy, especially in winter when lean and under-nourished bodies need protection against the bitter and hostile weather.
