The NWFP Governor Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (Retd) has asked the workers to perform their responsibilities with sincerity, devotion and honesty which, he added was extremely necessary for the progress of their respective institutions as well.
Talking to a 27-member representative delegation of the NWFP Pakistan Workers Confederation, which called on him under the leadership of its President Abdul Rab Sabir, at Governor House here on Tuesday the Governor said in fact the organisations to which they attached were their own, and their strength and development itself provided guarantee towards their prosperity.
Provincial Labour and Manpower Secretary Badshah Gul Wazir and Director Labour Khalid Jan Durrani were also present on this occasion.
Referring to the problems raised by the members of the delegation on this occasion, the Governor said most of them had cropped up because of their past mistakes and negligence and sincere efforts had to be made for their lasting solution.
He especially mentioned the state of affairs of the closed industrial units and said no doubt all concerned organisations earnestly desired to re-activate them but unfortunately their long closure was itself a major hurdle in that respect.
In this connection he also mentioned the heavy debt burden on those industrial concerns and said, "this was also hurdling their revival". However, he expressed the hope if all concerned continued their struggle, solution to such complicated problems was also possible.
Responding to the problems pin pointed by the members of the delegation especially relating to the utilisation of Workers Welfare Fund as well as the health and educational institutions being run through it, the Governor assured to refer them to the concerned quarters for solution.
Abdul Rab Sabir as well as other labour leaders including Master Khudadad Khan and Jehanzeb Khan while talking on this occasion welcomed the announcement made by the President of Pakistan General Parvez Musharraf with regard to enhancement in the minimum level of income of a Labour as well as old age pension and said he really deserved great tributes for such a bold step.
They also thanked the governor for taking keen interest in the solution of problems being faced by the workers of the province as well as extending due co-operation in that respect.
While referring to the industrial development process they were of the view that sincere co-operation and understanding between both the employees and employers was must and their joint efforts had a key role in that connection. However, they added, then they all were actively engaged in the economic development of the province by following the same principle.
They also apprised the governor about some of their problems and difficulties especially with reference to the utilisation of Workers Welfare Fund as well as the educational and health institutions being run through it.
