As far as "Safai" or "Cleanness" is concerned it literally means "habitually neat." Does it reflect in our practical life in its real sense? Do we really care about this Islamic ideology?
Observations reveal that we are not sincere in performing our lawful duty towards this Islamic belief. Moving around during day-to-day activities, we can easily observe how the very theme has been crippled.
Generally speaking, the Safai we are referring to has been more or less restricted to our bodily or personal Safai, exclusively. If we live in a posh area, take a bath in the morning, nicely dress up, sit in a clean car. Is it what we call Safai.
We cannot adjudge ourselves merely by praying five times and not paying any attention to the basic tenets including the Sunnah of Safai, we cannot consider ourselves faithful to our religion.
The fact is that the canvas of this subject is very widely spread and does not restrict at all to a particular activity. We have to go farther in order to analyse this issue. We cannot claim to be a true Muslim until and unless our minds and hearts are clean, clean off all the worldly dirt.
Our thinking and feelings for others are pure in nature. We have to value our day to day activities while dealing with others, and also see how faithful we are as far as our commitments are concerned.
In our daily routine, the habit of lying, using abusive language and other vulgarity in our conversations, and in practical life, has become a common feature for us.
Intentionally or unintentionally we always involved ourselves in odd activities, which directly or indirectly affect others, causing discomfort and humiliation for others, for example while cleaning our places we often shift the garbage next doors or throw it without thinking that it will make a mess around.
We do not bother to clean the mess caused by us during the course of our business.
The footpaths are always dirty with the trash of hawkers. The roadside hotels/canteens occupying the grassy road dividers (islands) ignorantly leave behind trash. Cold drink cans and plastic bags can commonly be seen on the footpaths or close to the stores/shops.
Also common is the blowing of horns in residential areas, the scratching of motor cycles by the youths on the roads, loudspeakers used for the purpose of celebrating musical evenings or tape recorders/DVD system used car at full volume as are motorcycles making noise in the night causing disturbance to the sleepy or sick residents including infants.
The overflow of garbage causes the environment to be dirty and smelly for the entire vicinity.
The hiking of price of essential items during the Holy month of Ramazan and other religious occasions, the dirt, and wastage that we always witness particularly after Eid-ul-Azha in our neighbourhood are some of the wrongs done by people. Bus stops meant for the convenience of the general public have been converted into canteen and snack bars, Washrooms/toilets of the offices, toilets in trains, toilets at railway stations, halls, where thousands of people stay for long hours are filthy, smelly and are unhygienically used.
The public parks, picnic spots, lakes and beaches are also no exception. Are these places used/maintained by a cultured society in accordance with the Islamic requirement.
There are certain basic rules, which a child learns from the very beginning either from school or from home.
He/she is taught the definition of cleanness and the ethics of hygiene from the very day he/she starts understanding things. This is something that you get as a result of heritage. It has nothing to do with poverty or status in society.
The whole scenario gives the impression that as Muslims we are least bothered about cleanliness, which is the most important aspect of our religion imposed on all of us as Sunnah.
We as citizens, particularly the youth, have some moral obligations. We are at the level of prevention. Prevention is better than cure. We should not forget that we are all accountable to some one, some day, for all our wrong-doings, illicit activities and our failure in performing the mandatory duty towards Huqooq-ul-Ibad, that undoubtedly covers the subject of Safai under its jurisdiction.
