US stocks strengthened Tuesday on sharply stronger consumer confidence data and gains in Internet stocks following a brokerage's upgrade of Web retailer Amazon.com Inc. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also got a boost from Pfizer Inc, which rose 1.7 percent to $26.97. The drug maker said it won regulatory clearance to sell its anti-fungus medicine Vfend to treat serious hospital-acquired bloodstream infections.
At midday, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 58.86 points, or 0.54 percent, at 10,833.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 6.41 points, or 0.53 percent, at 1,211.35. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was up 14.23 points, or 0.66 percent, at 2,168.46. Nasdaq hit its highest intraday level since July 2, 2001.
