Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Shahzada Alam on Wednesday directed all cellular companies to improve their efficiency to provide quality services. Stern action would be taken against those companies which would not improve their quality of service by serving show cause notices and imposing fines, the PTA Chairman told a private TV channel.
He was commenting on a question that daily several complaints were being registered about the poor quality of service and often line disconnects during the conversation or network remains busy for hours in a day.
He said the number of mobile phone users had increased manifold during the last year and it could be one of the reasons behind the low quality service.
To a question, he said during the current year mobile companies had provided more than 5.5 million new connections across the country.
In 2004, the number of mobile phone users had increased from 3 million to more than 8.5 million.
The increase showed that Pakistan was the fastest in providing cellular mobile connection in the world, he added.
He further said PTA was planning to conduct a survey in January 2005 to ascertain problems of the mobile phone users and would seek their valued suggestions to improve the quality of mobile phone service.
