The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has blacklisted 51 higher learning institutions illegally operating in the country, directing their administration to shun operations with an immediate effect. According to HEC, around 41 foreign and 10 local universities are operating unlawfully in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar.
HEC has cautioned that students may face subsequent problems in procurement of jobs, as degrees from these institutions are not recognised by the government.
According to further details, these illegal universities have set up nearly 178 campuses all across the country. Local chartered universities have 78 campuses while around 100 campuses are running under the auspices of foreign institutions.
Local chartered universities operating unlawfully include: Al-Khair University Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education, Karachi, Hamdard University, Karachi, Iqra University, Karachi, Mohi-ud-Din Islamic University, Nerian Sharif, AJ&K, National Group of Textile College, Preston Institute of Management Science & Technology, Karachi, Preston University, Kohat, and Sarhad University of Science & Information Technology Peshawar.
Foreign institutions operating unlawfully are: Adamson University, American International University, American University of London, American International University, American School of International Business, American World University International (AWUI), College Swisse Switzerland, East-West University Chicago, E-University System, Glamshire University, International University of America USA, The International University USA, Newport University USA, The Open International University for Complementary Medicines (OIUCM) Columbo, Planwell University, USA, Washington University USA, Western International University, University of Economics & Technology, University of Houston Clear Lake, Abudbakr Islamic University, Al-Qasim University, The Elites University, Islamic Missionary University, Jamia Arabia, Junipar University, Lincoln Institute, Pak Lawrence University, Sattaria Islamic University, University of Islamic Studies, University of Southern Pakistan, Quetta Institute of Information Technology, Asian Management Development Center, Super Tech Institute of Computer Sciences, Lawrence Institute of Management Sciences, Proceed Institute of Management and Information Technology, College of Business Administration, American University of Hawai, Genesys University, USA, College of Accounting and Management Sciences and London College of Professionals.
Higher Education Commission has advised parents and students to check the status of these institutions from the Commission and the public sector universities in whose jurisdiction these are being operated before seeking admission and making financial transaction.
