Pakistan has sought the United States' technical and financial assistance in training its agriculture scientists and researchers in a bid to boost country's agro-based economy. Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan made the request at a one-on-one meeting with US Ambassador, Ryan C. Crocker here on Thursday. An official source privy to the meeting told Business Recorder that the minister had also asked US to extend its help in other areas especially micro and drip-irrigation technologies.
The water shortage had been hampering the promotion of agriculture sector in the country and top level authorities believed that with the US help the problem could be sorted out amicably, the official said.
Another immense problem the country's agriculture sector has been facing was a marked productivity gap between progressive and traditional growers, and the minister also asked the ambassador to take up this matter with his government, the source added.
Sikandar Bosan, during the meeting, also sought US government's help in the promotion of livestock sector. The minister conveyed to the ambassador that Pakistan was ready to welcome potential investors from US in milk processing industry.
It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan is the fifth largest milk producing country in the world, but only 2 percent of the total production is processed and exported.
