Punjab government has prepared a multi-pronged plan for producing 300 megawatt electricity aimed at providing inexpensive electricity to the masses in the Punjab. Official sources told Business Recorder here on Sunday that for this purpose 42 sites including Sialkot have been identified for the establishment of hydro power stations for producing electricity and work on this proposed project would be assumed in near future.
The power station having the capacity of 50 megawatt would be set up at selected sites for generating the electricity in the Punjab. In addition to this government was utilising more than Rs 2.60 billion for undertaking flood protection plan in various parts of the Punjab.
The step has been taken for averting the threats of flood to various cities while protecting vast agricultural land from devastation in the Punjab.
Under the programme small dams would be constructed in Attock, Jehlum, Pothohar and Chakwal areas for the storage of rainwater. Similarly, 200 ponds would also be constructed in rural areas for storage of rain and floodwater for fulfilling the needs and requirements of agricultural sector of the Punjab.
Special steps under the plan have also been taken for storage of rainwater in DG Khan and for this purpose reservoirs would be constructed in the area, sources added.
