Five teenaged scientists from Pakistan will visit USA this spring to compete with nearly 1400 scientists selected on their basis of innovation in science and technology. Intel Corporation, world's leading chip maker and computer manufacturer holds international Science Olympiad every year since 1997. It generally attracts about 1400 young scientists from different countries. The young Pakistanis are a group of three students from government high school Fatehjang, one from ADP Iqra, Quetta and a girl Fatima Shami from Islamabad Convent School.
They were selected on the basis of the exhibition of their projects in which 82 schools all over the country participated. The group from Fatehjang school comprising Danish Ramazan, Mohammed Tasleem and Nasir Mahmood had presented their project titled 'Response of 8 Moonbeam Lines under Rainfed Conditions.' The two others in individual category are Sadan Nasir whose project was 'Real Time 3D environment Creation, Taxanomy Analysis and Solution, ' while Fatima Shami has prepared a project 'Effects of Reused Edible oil on Human Health.'
Last year, Intel organised similar competition but only schools from Islamabad and Rawalpindi had participated. The Pakistani team, which competed for the first time, did not win any medal.
Chief guest at the conclusion of the two day exhibition, Dr Attaur Rahman Khan, Minister for science and technology and Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, who was greatly impressed by the 80 odd projects spoke ardently of the innovations by the young scientists.
The chief guest whose life time passion is science spoke of the marvellous new frontiers in physics, chemistry, and biology, which make the world a truly wonderful creation of God Almighty. According to the Professor, acquisition of knowledge is a great blessing and they should make the best of the opportunities because you are the future custodians of Pakistan.
Kamil Hasan, country manager of Intel Pakistan, said that some 80,000 teachers have been given training by the company. For the competition, some 1400 finalists from all over the world will take part in the fair. Pakistan had entered last year for the first time.
