Punjab Highways Department (PHD) has set up a Road Safety Cell, which would serve as a "think-thank" for determining the causes of road accidents, and ensuring road safety. Punjab Communication and Works Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin stated this while presiding over a high level meeting here on Friday, disclosed an official.
Secretary C&W Sibtain Fazal Haleem, Additional Secretary Technical Hafiz Masood Rasool, Highways Chief Engineer and other senior officers attended the meeting.
The Minister said that traffic accidents on roads could be minimised by dualisation of roads, eliminating black spots, installation of international standard traffic signs and removal of encroachments. A traffic plan has been chalked out for dualisation of all provincial roads by the year 2015, he added.
He directed that use of high quality material should be ensured in the repair and construction of roads and all schemes be completed within the stipulated period.
