Renowned international artists, poets, writers, scholars and researchers of Urdu language would participate in the First International Urdu Conference scheduled for March 9 to 13, 2005. President General Pervez Musharraf has been requested to open the conference while Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz is being approached to chair the closing session.
Artists from Pakistan and India like Jagjit Singh, Shabana Azmi, Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, Yasmeen Tahir, Naeem Tahir and Iqbal Bano will attend the conference.
The five-day conference " Urdu Hai Jis Ka Naam" is being organised by the Grapevine Communications in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Ministry of Culture, Academy of Letters, National Book Foundation and National Language Authority.
Speaking on the occasion, head of the organisation committee- CDA chairman Kamran Lashari said Daman-e-Koh was being redesigned for holding the cultural events of Urdu Conference.
Urdu language is spoken by more than a billion people around the globe, and is the fourth largest language after Chinese, English and French. Having a relatively short history of around 600 to 700 years, Urdu has still managed to establish itself through poetry, prose, short story, novel and other forms of literature.
Addressing a press conference, organisation committee members said the basic objective to organise the international event was to persuade the young generation of Pakistan to adopt Urdu in modern environment.
The conference would promote the performing arts related to Urdu in a rather fascinating manner to attract the youngsters of Pakistan in order to encourage new talent to choose career in their respective fields of creative performing arts where huge vacuum has created.
The committee members informed the media Mehfil-e-Mushaira, traditional food festival, display of Pakistani and Indian films, exhibition, musical shows besides other events would be the key segments of five-day International Urdu Conference.
Lashari said that five-day Urdu gala would give tremendous opportunity to the people to get the real flavour of Urdu culture.
The changing colours of Urdu columns, journalism, script writing for TV, radio and film will also be discussed during different sessions of the moot.
