Existing number of judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan is enough to handle the pending cases and there is no need to increase the number of judges in the apex court. Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said this on Monday while talking to mediamen after the oath-taking ceremony as acting Chief Justice of Pakistan in the absence of Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, who has proceeded to Saudi Arabia to perform Haj. Under the Constitution, the total number of judges in the apex court is 17 and presently three posts of judges are vacant.
When asked about the disposal of pendency of thousands of cases, he said: "I will perform my duties to the best of abilities during my short span of time as acting Chief Justice of Pakistan. "I will request to my fellow judges to avoid adjournment and try to take up more and more cases," he added.
Regarding the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar said there was no requisition for the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan so far.
